Best portable power station for running a fridge in South Africa (2026)

Prices checked 23 October 2026. Prices and stock change often – always confirm on the retailer's page before buying.

We have not tested these units ourselves. This guide compares manufacturer specifications and South African retailer listings, and shows you how to work out what your own fridge needs.

Quick answer

Step 1: How to size a power station for your fridge

a) Running watts

Check the rating plate inside the fridge or in the manual. A typical household fridge draws roughly 100–200 W while the compressor runs, but use your own figure. The power station's continuous AC output must be comfortably above this.

b) Start-up surge

A compressor needs a short burst of extra power to start – often several times its running watts. Exact figures vary by fridge and are rarely published, so look for a power station whose surge rating is well above your fridge's running watts. If the unit trips every time the compressor kicks in, the surge rating is too low.

c) Daily energy (the number that decides capacity)

The compressor cycles on and off, so the fridge does not draw its rated watts all day. The best figure is the annual consumption on the energy label (kWh/year).

Daily energy = annual kWh ÷ 365
Example: 365 kWh/year ÷ 365 = 1.0 kWh per day = 1000 Wh/day ≈ 42 Wh per hour on average.

Usable capacity ≈ rated Wh × 0.85 (inverter and conversion losses; Jackery uses this same 0.85 factor in its own runtime formula).
Example: 1024 Wh × 0.85 ≈ 870 Wh usable.

Runtime ≈ usable Wh ÷ average Wh per hour
Example: 870 ÷ 42 ≈ about 20 hours for that fridge on a 1024 Wh unit.

For a typical 2–4 hour outage, even a 768 Wh unit covers most fridges with room to spare. Keep the door closed and the fridge will use less. If you have an older fridge, a plug-in energy meter will give you a real number in 24 hours.

EcoFlow DELTA 2

1024 Wh LiFePO4 battery rated for 3000 cycles to 80%+ capacity, 1800 W AC output with a 2700 W surge rating, six AC outlets, 12 kg and a 5-year warranty, according to EcoFlow South Africa. It can be expanded with an extra battery, and EcoFlow lists an EPS (emergency power supply) auto-switch mode. Its large surge figure gives plenty of headroom for a fridge compressor start.

EcoFlow RIVER 2 Pro

768 Wh LFP battery (3000 cycles to 80%+), 800 W pure sine wave AC output (surge 1600 W), about 7.8 kg, and a <30 ms EPS switch-over, per EcoFlow ZA. Good for a bar fridge, a 12 V camping fridge on an overlanding trip, or a household fridge through a short outage. We could not confirm the warranty period on the product page, so check with the retailer.

Jackery Explorer 1000 Pro

1002 Wh lithium-ion battery (18650 cells, rated ≥1000 cycles to 80%), 1000 W pure sine wave output with 2000 W surge, 11.5 kg and a 2-year warranty, according to Jackery South Africa. The SA listing says it has UPS functionality. Note the lower cycle rating than the LiFePO4 units if you expect daily outages.

Gizzu Hero Max

1024 Wh LiFePO4 battery (3500 cycles to 80%), pure sine wave AC output rated at 1200 W, 10 ms UPS switch-over and a 24-month warranty, per Gizzu. Gizzu says loads above 1200 W get up to 10 seconds before the unit shuts down; it does not publish a separate surge rating, so check that your fridge starts reliably. Product weight is listed as 11.5 kg by retailer Nivo. The lowest price in this guide, but it was out of stock at Gizzu when we checked.
